Jean-Francois-Gerard Fontallard 'French' W/C Painting of a Beauty. Watercolor and gouache on paper signed and dated 1835. Mounted in gilt gesso frame and under glass front.
Jean Francois Gerard Fontallard was born in 1772 (and not in 1777 as Schidlof writes) in Mezieres (France) and died in 1858 in Paris. He began as a militarian, but parallelly studied at the Ecole des Beaux Arts of Paris and when a Lieutenant, visited the studios of David and Augustin. He made his debut at the Salon of 1798 and regularly exhibited there. According to Schidlof he was a very good miniaturist, whose works, particularly those of the first period, show the influence of Augustin.
