Jean Francois Gerard Fontallard was born in 1772 (and not in 1777 as Schidlof writes) in Mezieres (France) and died in 1858 in Paris. He began as a militarian, but parallelly studied at the Ecole des Beaux Arts of Paris and when a Lieutenant, visited the studios of David and Augustin. He made his debut at the Salon of 1798 and regularly exhibited there. According to Schidlof he was a very good miniaturist, whose works, particularly those of the first period, show the influence of Augustin.
